Ribbons

Journeys are an interesting aspect of human life. I remember running relay races as a child and then in the end, receiving a ribbon to show how well I placed. I hung those ribbons in a collection, but my greatest memories of those relay races were the flashing mental snapshots of the event as it happened. The ribbon was just the prize in the end to signify my involvement in this process and verification of a satisfactory conclusion.

For months I have tried to discern what this series of photographs was about. Was it a visual display of LA Tech students? No, because not all are students at that university. Were they all just my friends? No, many I met after their wish to be involved in this project. And then I realized that my point in this series wasn't the conclusion, but the journey along the way. The interactions with each individual, a small one-hour party each time, where opinions were shared, insights gained, jokes told, new dance moves shown, alternating turns with the camera, and overall, just a joyous time where nothing else mattered but the act of taking a photograph itself.

I have no greater point to make with these photographs. The true spirit of these photographs is the enery that existed each time we shot. My ribbon is the one photograph that summed up each session, but the act itself serves as the flashing physical snapshots of the journey along the way to arrive at the end.
